BARBAN, also known as a carbamate ester, is a crystalline solid with the chemical formula 4-chlorobut-2-yn-1-yl ester of N-(3-chlorophenyl)carbamic acid. It has a water solubility of 11 ppm at 20°C and is characterized by its melting point of 75°C (167°F). BARBAN is insoluble in water, slightly soluble in hexane, and soluble in benzene and chlorinated hydrocarbons. It is hydrolyzed by acids and alkalies, with alkaline hydrolysis liberating the terminal chlorine atom. BARBAN was historically used as a selective herbicide but is no longer approved for use within the European Community.
